Compassion Day

While not physically imposing as some of the other Compassion sites, the Las Delcias Compassion site has made an impact in the short time it has been approved and opened.
What is Compassion International?
The direct quote from their website explains their mission much better than I could:
Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training.
Today, Compassion helps more than 1.2 million children in 26 countries.
Wow, I know. My family sponsors two children, one who attends the new site in Las Delicias!

My cabin woke up (my father, my brother, and I) with an excited feeling; today I would meet my little sister for the first time. My father had already met her in November, and I couldn’t wait to meet her! The team as a whole was pumped up and ready to meet their children.
The church itself was adorned with balloons and banners. As beautiful as it was to hear the children singing and laughing, I think that just to celebrate some of the new sponsors such as Yolanda sponsoring Bryan and Mike sponsoring Jimmy.
We listened to songs and watched adorable skits while the Compassion Pastor Alex dressed up as frog and danced. Afterwards we played outside with piƱatas and soccer.
We went to get lunch and we sat down with Rosa, Tania’s (our sponsor child) grandma and she explained that Tania was so excited to receive that monthly letter from us. And it broke my heart when we later visited her home, which was literally shambles and saw her poor living conditions. Despite her broken home she was healthy due to the regular checkups Compassion gave.  I almost cried when she gave her shy, but immensely precious smile when we gave her new backpack.
When we left we were quite sad to leave her, as was the rest of team with their children. Today we celebrated the union of church and community. But we also left our children behind. But someone remember,
“Hey they live right there. We’ll probably see them tomorrow. “
And we did.

Mike and Jimmy have a victorious moment in soccer.

The Team Arrives!

Well we have finally settled down in El Salvador! (So that means I have time to write this) Well to be exact, we are finally having a regular schedule, since we landed on Saturday.  The team did look a little tired when we called them out from their comfortable beds on Saturday at 3:45 to go endure a long 7-hour plane ride, to go down and serve the rural community, Las Delicias. After some wonderful time to rest after the trip, we had brunch with Pastor Miguel Duran and got a basic assessment of our situation down in El Salvador and took our van/bus down to the community for the first time.

New timers, Jon, Carrie and Anthony were a little shocked at immensely warm welcome that the rest of the team got from our partner church, Buen Sarmitano (The Good Samaritan). Yolanda, who is extremely popular with the little ones, was greeted with gigantic hugs and flurry of incredibly fast Spanish hellos, how do you dos, and we missed you and you have grown!
As the team settled down for service we were introduced ourselves to the church and then we worshiped. Worship. We often see Trent leading worship with guitars and drums and the whatnot. All these people had was a groovy little synth and a bass. But what they didn’t have in equipment was their voice and their spirit.  Such passion and the whole church stood for the sound of clapping and loud singing and you knew, well-felt more accurately described, this congregation was a family.
After worship, James (who was to be called Santiago in El Salvador) gave a great sermon about the importance of family. Walter our Enlace partner helped translate, while a chorus of amends rang from the church. We finished listening to the sermon and after a deep, heartfelt prayer we went home. But on today (Tuesday) we came back for Compassion Day.
The newly opened Compassion site on the church grounds (for those of you who do not what Compassion is I recommend you ask Ian or go to the website) had brought more children and families closer to the church, but they do not regularly attend.  We saw on Sunday, Mireya, a sponsored girl reunited with Dawn our leader and Mireya’s sponsor. Dawn with tears in her eyes and laughing with joy embraced Mireya and there was much kissing and hugging.
Because Compassion day was so big, it needs its own post to do it justice, so this is the end for today.
Adios Amigos!
(Goodbye Friends)

Off to ElSalvador - DIfferent but The Same

This morning at 4:15 a.m. i met with 13 people ranging in age from 12 -50 to send them off to El Salvador. As I shared Philippians 2:1-11 with them, encouraging them in Christ to be united, to be one in Spirit, to not be selfish, or think of them selves as more important than anyone else, to have the same attitude as Christ, and leave all their right behind so they can serve like He did, it was so cool!!!!!

As I looked around the circle and saw a crew of people so diverse yet so the same. A junior high boy with a mom from Nicaragua and a dad from Washington, a couple of ext drug addicts, the son of a missionary, a dentist, a termite inspector, a builder an insurance agent, a mom, a high tech, high powered sales woman, a real estate agent, a high young man getting ready to enter high school, a college student and a guy who works at an oil refinery, they were brown, white, tall, short, all from different backgrounds and life experiences. They could not be more different, yet they really are the same. They all have come to know that they need Jesus in their lives, to forgive their sins and lead their lives. They all desire to show and share God's love with others, they all have chosen to invest their time, their talent and their resources to do just that!!! They all have people they love they have left behind them and who are supporting them as they GO!!! They all could use our prayers as they GO and our encouragement as they come home. They all are taking a risk, stepping out in faith and they all are a great example to others no matter who you are and where you come from of how God can work in and through a life. I am blessed to work with such people.

Pray with me for Dawn & James as they lead this team. Pray for the team and our partners in El Salvador that as they work together in the community people would experience the love of Jesus in a very real way.

In His Strength,

Ian
